Cage-free dog daycare and dog boarding is a relatively new concept. The first cage-free dog daycare and dog boarding facility was opened in 1998 in Los Angeles by dog behaviorist Tamar Geller. Since then, the concept has spread rapidly across the US. There are currently cage-free dog daycare facilities in every major US city to include the DFW Metroplex.

Many dog owners have rejected the traditional kennel facility where dogs are kept in small cages in favor of the cage-free concept where their well behaved dog is allowed to exercise and play throughout the day. In this way, dogs taken to daycare and boarding facilities that use the cage-free concept typically receive more exercise than dogs boarded in traditional kennels. Most (but not all) kennels allow dogs to exercise in 15 minute increments 2-4 times per day. Many kennels charge extra for this benefit.

According to Nicholas Dodman, world-renowned animal behaviorist and author of The Well-Adjusted Dog:

Dogs that are regularly exercised live up to 30% longer than their sedentary counterparts.
Increasing exercise has produced the most profound change in dog behavior - both calming and mood stabilizing effects.
High energy breeds require a minimum of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise per day, and probably more.
It is only possible to achieve this level of exercise off-leash, and dogs need an opportunity to run free.
